Doctor’s awful mistake disgraces medical fraternity

There are certain professions in each and every society which are highly esteemed thanks to their responsibilities, nobility and also selfless services to the humanity. The medical profession happens to be one of them and for that reason the doctors are not only respected but also depended to the highest extent. What may happen if the doctor gets identified for wrong practice or is found to diagnose wrongly? There will definitely be mayhem and the dignity of this noble profession will be shattered. The same took place in Kolkata, one of premier cities of India, yesterday.

The nationally acclaimed SSKM Hospital remained witness to a bizarre incident where a nonagenarian patient suffered two surgeries on a single day due to the awful blunder of a junior doctor. What did happen actually? Pramila Dey, the 93-year-old woman, was admitted to the high-status Woodburn Ward of the hospital on Tuesday night after falling at home and injuring her right leg consequently. She was admitted under the surveillance of Dr Samar Gupta who took the decision that Mrs. Dey would undergo a skeletal traction. It is to be noted that this process involves the insertion of a 4-inch-long steel rod into the right leg.

This was decided and there were expectations that everything would go as usual. But what did happen after that was totally unusual. As stated by sources, pins were inserted in the wrong limb under the supervision of Surajit Kundu, a junior doctor of the hospital.

This horrendous mistake was first detected by the family of Mrs. Dey who were horrified to find out that her left leg had been operated upon instead of the right. The family got furious and rushed to lodge a complaint with the hospital superintendent.
Though Doctor Samar Gupta has declined to comment, the hospital authority acknowledged the mistake and confirmed that corrective measures on the right leg had already been taken.

We have a very simple question. How can a doctor be so irresponsible? SSKM along with the Woodburn Ward are highly respected and it is expected hence that proficient and deliberate doctors should be in the hospital. This is not only a noble profession but also offers the greatest barrier to death.

Should the doctor be suspended or his license be rescinded instead of mere castigations? Suggest us.
